Speech! Speech!

The Onion Discussions

Edwin Burdis | Hannah Jones

Sunday 23 March 2014, 2.00-4.00pm. Ticket £5.00. Bookings only. Limited capacity.
VITRINE Basement, Bermondsey Street

VITRINE presents ‘Speech! Speech!’ the first in a new series of The Onion Discussions, organised by Jack Tan and Elizabeth Porter, with three-course meal and guest speakers Edwin Burdis and Hannah Jones.

The Onion Discussions is a series of Sunday lunches exploring the creative possibilities of the dinner speech that seek to peel back ideas within art and culture for a deeper look. Often taking the form of panel discussions or roundtables, the Onion Discussions brings together artists, writers, curators and other producers to consider pertinent issues in contemporary visual, spatial and material culture in an experimental format and in a cross-disciplinary context.

Two artists are invited to make speeches at the event – one before dinner and one after dinner – in response to the etymology of the word ‘speak’. The artists are free to interpret and to reimagine what a ‘speech’ is and to respond in any way and to anything from the etymology or idea of speech. This series develops the Onion discussions’ exploration of different discursive formats. Come eat and hear Edwin Burdis and Hannah Jones make a Speech! Speech!

Notes

Edwin Burdis

Edwin Burdis (b. Newcastle, 1974) has significantly contributed to the London art scene for over a decade. Edwin explores a unique and extravagant fusion between art, music and sub-cultural references, working across painting, sound, sculpture and drawing. His drawings and paintings often set the tone for performances, all part of an on-going compulsion to produce. http://www.vitrinegallery.co.uk/artist/edwin-burdis

Hannah Catherine Jones

I am concerned with the moment of live performance – the uniting of performer and audience in a contract of time and space. Predominantly static, presenting myself as a living sculpture and often, living pun, I allow myself to be observed visually and aurally by audience and camera. The presence and intensity from the perspective of the audience, performer and camera is an on-going investigation. http://foxymoron.co.uk
